Who is qualified & competent to carry out Electrical work ?

In short anyone who is registered with the following government approved bodies.

ELECSA, NAPIT, ECA, NICEIC, BSI

If you want to check if someone is suitably qualified/registered with these governing bodies; you can do this by visiting the websites of the organisations listed above and searching for the company you wish to use.

All the above listed organisations, carry the same weight, as far as electrical work is concerned. They are all government approved and they all carry out thorough checks and vet electricians; before they are accepted onto their register.

In general there are 2 main categories under which, persons carrying out electrical work can register, with the above organisations:

1. Defined Scope: Anyone registered under this category is limited to the type of electrical work they can carry out.*

2. Full Scope : This category entitles an electrician to carry out all levels of electrical work.**

* usually for plumbers & kitchen fitters to add/move a socket not suitable for major works eg. Full rewires or change of consumers units

** capable of carrying out all types of work; full rewires, change of consumer units.

To search for a local electrician, go to any of the above organisations websites, or use the LABC (LOCAL AUTHORITY BUILDING CONTROL PART P COMPETENT PERSONS REGISTER) website.

What is Part P?

Part P is a part of the Building Regulations which has been introduced by government and affects all electrical work carried out in dwellings.

People carrying out electrical work in homes and gardens in England and Wales should follow the rules set out in Part P of the Building Regulations to ensure that they are complying with the law. These rules are designed to ensure that electrical work is safe.

Why has Part P been introduced?

Part P has been introduced in order to:

  • reduce the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty electrical installations

  • make life harder for 'cowboys' to leave electrical installations in an unsafe condition

GAS

Who is qualified/registered to carry out work on gas installations?

All works relating to gas, however large or small MUST be carried out by a CORGI registered company.

If you intend to Lett your house, you must have a gas safety inspection carried out on your installation and appliances, annually and on every change of occupancy. This is a legal requirement.

It would be similarly advised for electricity. To have a full inspection carried out, prior to letting and on the change of every occupancy. Although it is not a black & white legal requirement like gas; a landlord is responsible and therfore liable under health and safety, to make sure that the property is  safe.

The information above is designed to provide basic, general guidance on issues which confuse many home owners.

Further detailed information can be obtained from any of the websites listed above.
